Blueberry tomato is a small round anthocyanin rich cherry type notable for its blue black shoulders that develop only where the fruit receives direct sun. Often attributed to early Indigo series breeding by Jim Myers at Oregon State University in the late 2000s, it was selected from high anthocyanin lines crossed with standard red cherries to increase pigment density and shelf firmness. Fruit are typically about an inch across with a deep red interior, differing from larger Indigo Rose types and from non pigmented cherries that lack the characteristic blue cast. Ripeness is indicated when the shaded portions turn full red and the blue areas take on a softer matte finish. Plants are indeterminate with moderate vigor and set continuously in warm weather, producing clusters that color gradually as sun exposure increases.
