Beaked Hazelnut (Corylus cornuta) is named for the bristly, beak shaped husk surrounding each small edible nut. The nuts ripen from late summer into early fall and are heavily used by squirrels and other wildlife.
This native shrub forms dense stands in the forest understory around Oak Summit Nursery. It grows well in shade and can be used as a native hedge, while plants with more sun generally produce more nuts.
