American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) is a native shrub that produces clusters of small edible nuts inside frilly papery husks. The nuts ripen from late summer into early fall and are also valued by wildlife, especially squirrels.
These seeds came from a wild Manitoba population. Plants form a dense understory in shade but generally produce more nuts in full sun.
