Altaiskaya Sea Buckthorn is a Russian female cultivar selected for heavy yields of large bright orange berries. The tart citrus flavoured fruit is used for juice, jam, and sauces.
The upright shrub has a moderate number of thorns. A compatible male Sea Buckthorn is required for pollination and fruit production.

More about this plant
From the Altai
Altaiskaya comes from the Lisavenko breeding programme in the Altai region of Siberia. In a comparison of varieties there it was the sweetest, and it is still used as the standard for sweet fruit when newer varieties are tested.
A shrub for hard ground
Sea buckthorn fixes its own nitrogen, which is part of why it grows where other fruit will not. Young plants still need water while they establish. It spreads by root suckers, so give it a place where that can be mown or managed.
