Cold Hardy Plums and Cherry Hybrids: Summer Field Notes

white nanking cherries
white nanking cherries. like the regular red ones, the same fuzzy leaves and quickly rooting softwood, but the fruit are ivory white. they're hard to track down, I was lucky enough to graft some out last spring, and now this june the flush of growth from those grafts have produced a set of rooted cuttings. now I could plant a set of these own rooted white nanking into a bed to grow more, and the cycle goes on exponentially growing stock material... or just to have some backups. Another interested batch of these I'm growing are seedlings from white nanking, where some will be red, but some of the self pollinate could be white, and I think about trying some breeding or selection with them. wouldn't it be cool to have cherries that are white with streaks of red. or light pink. more adventurous, imagine a white hybrid plum, which would take some time and at least two generations with back crossing,
