Cold Hardy Plums and Cherry Hybrids: Summer Field Notes
Field note · August 2026
Second year cherry prinsepia seedlings
cherry prinsepia seedlings in their second year. these grow like a sprawling multi stemmed shrub, they make a good hedge - and they're full of racemes with bright red sour fruit. the seeds have a crazy bumpy texture, very distinctive. when I pick them they're easy enough to collect, though you have or watch for the occasional hidden barb along the branches. Sort of rare fruit on the prairies, but fully cold hardy here. Our seedlings were small by last fall so I left these trays outside and covered and they overwintered fine, and they'll be big enough to offer for the first time the fall.
