These silver buffaloberry seeds are ready to plant after a few months in the fridge in damp sand. This seed was collected last fall and has a high germination rate, it’s the yellow variety and some percentage of the seedlings will produce either red or yellow fruit.

potting up seedlings, natives like silver buffaloberry (Shepherdia argentea), wolf willow (Elaeagnus commutata), a collection of currants and gooseberries. experimenting with container nursery, most of the plants are in pots and plug trays for this year.. last year I would have them all in the ground, but I think for some species a pot works better.. and I can ship them in the fall, basically can't do that with bare root here on the Canadian prairies, when the leaves drop and it snows the next day. #backyardnursery

Silver Buffaloberry est un petit arbre ou un grand buisson atteignant 16 pieds de haut avec des feuilles bleu-vert, des épines et des baies rouge vif. Le fruit est comestible et fait une excellente gelée, il a un goût sucré et acidulé. C'est un excellent arbre faunique. Semblable à l'argousier mais avec des feuilles plus petites et plus rondes et le fruit est rouge, il pousse en grappes le long des tiges. C'est un fixateur d'azote. Les arbres sont dioïques, ce qui signifie qu’il existe des plantes mâles et femelles – vous avez besoin des deux pour produire des fruits.

Nous avons collecté les graines dans un peuplement local poussant dans la zone 3 (-35F / -37C).
