Cold hardy spruce native to the Rocky Mountains and interior western North America. Grows 60 to 100 feet tall in the wild but remains smaller in cultivation. Form is narrow and conical with dense branches. Needles are short, sharp, and blue green giving the tree a soft color. Cones are small, cylindrical, and light brown. Very tolerant of cold winters and high elevations, often found above 3,000 feet in its native range. Adapted to moist, cool soils but less tolerant of drought and heat compared to Colorado blue spruce. Often planted as an ornamental evergreen or used in reforestation and shelterbelts in colder regions.
