Arrowwood Viburnum (Viburnum dentatum) is an eastern North American shrub with an upright, rounded habit. Blue black fruit feeds birds and other wildlife, while glossy toothed leaves turn orange and red in fall. Flat clusters of white flowers appear in late spring.

The shrub is used in tall hedges, screens, borders, and native plantings. Its common name refers to the straight stems' traditional use for arrow shafts.

The seed has double dormancy: roots develop during the warm phase and shoots emerge after the cold phase.

How to stratify seed

Warm stage first. Keep the same bag at room temperature for the warm period shown, then move it to the fridge.

In the fridge. Put the seed in a bag with a damp medium such as peat moss, vermiculite, sand or coco coir. The medium is only there to hold moisture. Keep the bag in the fridge, above freezing, for the cold period shown, then sow.

Or outside. Sow the seed outdoors in the fall and let winter do the cold period.
