Swedish Black Currant (Ribes nigrum 'Swedish Black')
Swedish Black Currant (Ribes nigrum 'Swedish Black')
The 'Swedish Black' currant is a cultivar with relatively mysterious origins, known for being one of the earliest ripening blackcurrant varieties. This variety is appreciated for its excellent flavor, which is mildly sweet with a slight tartness, making it ideal for fresh eating as well as for drying. It is popular in Europe but less common in the U.S.
This variety is distinct from other Swedish varieties like 'Ojebyn,' which is also known for its cold hardiness and good yield. 'Ojebyn' produces sweet berries suitable for various culinary applications but ripens slightly later than 'Swedish Black'
