Garden center at a big box store in zone 3, all the grapes for sale on the rack are zone 5-6. they all do this, when I mention it to the cashier it's just an inconvenience, i don't get why they bring in out of zone stock. don't trust garden centers hah

Starting more grapes from hardwood collected from a friend. it's challenging to grow grapes in zone 3 but it can be done with the right conditions and varieties.. for years I had given up on grapes but now have a renewed interest. going to attempt rooting in my grow room in deep pots with the tops bagged, to be transferred to a greenhouse next month. We hit -7C last night so I'm not brave enough to put anything green and leafy in the greenhouse yet, though all the germinated seeds out there were fine.

Valiant grape seeds. one of the most cold hardy grape cultivars, offering seeds from them is a fun addition to our seed shop and give people the opportunity to grow some grapes with diverse genetics.

Riverbank grape selection rooted cutting. moved from bottom heat into its own pot and bagged to harden off. if you have cuttings with a small amount of roots and to reduce watering / moisture loss when propagating high value plants you can use the bag method. #propagation

Valiant grapes waking up. Hoping to improve my grape selection this year, now that I've seen them overwinter in zn 3 without being covered up in the fall I might actually put them on a trellis #grapes

Hops at around four or weeks, I have them in small pots under grow lights and the bines are just starting to take off and run, this would be a good stage to transplant outside. #hops #seedstarting

Valiant grapes. some were growing in a tree.

Planted some grapes along this east wall, stucco with morning sun, heaped up with black soil and old wood chip then topped with straw. the eaves through will get directed into the bed, and the thick stucco should radiate some heat to help. hopefully a good spot for grapes, brianna, frontenac blanc, and some elmer swenson selections.

Grapes in a forest context. tried for years without the cage, and the vines would always get trimmed back by wildlife. finally put up some stucco wire cages and now the vines are reasonably safe to grow

Amur grape germinating after five months of stratification. One way to know your seed is ready is when any of them start to sprout in the bag, easier to plant at this stage. These went into plug trays 2-3 per cell, will see how they do.

Trying grape cuttings like this, in our root cellar where it's a bit cool and quite damp. dipped into some iba talc, a bit of cambium exposed, 2-3 node cuttings. last year through sheer neglect we had bundles of cuttings root in these conditions, but I wonder if I should move them outside and just keep in the shade. I was going to wait for some root development, and the root cellar isn't being used, figure at least they don't need to get watered in here. have a few shelves like this. advice welcome, still figuring out grapes

Valiant grapes coming along, I finally caged them. I think rabbits have been trimming them, so just a simple roll of stucco wire gives the small vines some protection and a scaffold.

Some potted grapes, minnesota 78 very similar to valiant. tasty, large seeds. I imagine they're larger on an established vine, these are going in the ground soon. #grapes

Virginia creeper seeds are ripe when the little grape-like fruits turn blue. This patch of vines where I like to collect are old and overtaking a stand of chokecherry.#seedsaving #virginiacreeper

Trying to identify grapes on the left, center is Beta from a young vine, right is riparia or wild grapes, and left is from a large vine planted in 2010. valiant? all are ripe here today and cold hardy zone 3 with no winter protection.

Hops are over head height now four weeks from when they started growing. our bines are five years old and started from seed, here I give them simple poles to climb then they'll span between the poles and male a wall of hops by the end of the summer, sometimes I'll run twine to guide them. #hops

Working on covering this wall with vines and espalier apples. Metal siding is easy for vines I just back out some of the sheet metal screws and wrap some copper wire around it, no need to add any other support

These cascade hops are the first to show some roots in our mist setup after two weeks. Usually after there's an inch or more if roots it's time to pot them up and start to harden them off. I'll wait for a few dozen to be ready before moving them, otherwise if starts to turn into too many small batches. Last year I found cuttings in a tray always have some early and late to root, even. few weeks apart. If would be more simple to start them in 50 cell trays and wait for the entire tray to root before moving them, and skip the step of potting up, but that would take up many times the space. Maybe next year. #propagation #softwoodpropagation #propagate #propagating #propagatingplants #softwoodcuttings #mistpropagation

Amur grape seedlings. plugs, seed started this spring. most of the mass is in the roots, we did a few kinds of grape seedlings this year and they worked out, you get a small starter plant with a few buds on top that's ready to take off in the second year. I would plant these with plenty of mulch. amur grape , vitus amurensis is a wild grape that's very cold hardy. the more common species around here is riparia, the riverbank grape.

Time to collect hops, as soon as they get some brown. the flowers are sticky inside and smell like an IPA. a few seeds will be stuck in each one.

Trying grapes in this sunny spot against a stucco wall. should be a good micro climate. it was just sand, so I added about 8 composted straw bales, 2 wheel barrows of soil, 2 more of old wood chip. then fifteen varieties of grapes. what a job, been thinking about it all summer. will get trellis or arbour once they get established. hah and probably get thinned if they all survive. #grapes are both hard and easy to grow here, just need the right location

Brianna is a tasty green grape that can handle -40 .. once the vines are established. I've seen several around southern manitoba trellised without any winter protection, though somewhere sheltered like against a building makes a good micro climate. added seeds to our shop, seedlings won't be exactly the same but you'll likely get some green grape with similar cold hardiness.

Trying to id these grapes. valiant left, this one right. both zone 3 hardy. mystery grape has red stems, looser clusters. grapes were a little more soft and overripe than valiant so maybe ripens earlier. been in cold storage, both were ripe a while ago. #grapes #valiantgrapes #plantidentification

Valiant grapes, perfectly ripe and tasting like concord. these grow at a friend's place and are fully hardy above the snow along a metal fence in zone 3 -40C. I was lucky enough to collect a box to make some grape jelly, and to restock our seeds. and I've been eating grapes all afternoon.

Donated some grapes today that we planted along the fences at @assiniboinefoodforest, thanks to the volunteers who came out and helped despite the wet weather! Grapes were planted along with some fall tasks like mulching and adding vole cages around new fruit trees. The acre sized and well fenced orchard is on fertile soil by the river in Brandon Manitoba, surrounded by public walking trails. An awesome ongoing project fuel entirely by donations and passionate volunteers. #foodforest #orchard

Virginia creeper

Instagram post ASC-040 Sep/23

Valiant grapes from softwood, I think the earliest ones from june will be large enough to ship in the spring. In year three with this nursery, finding many rooted cuttings and seedlings do need 1-2 years to get up to what I would consider good transplant size, and even then I should grade them. Something like 1-2 ft of top growth and a decent root mass is a good size for bare root. I've ordered tiny plugs with just a few strands of root and they're difficult to plant out and keep alive, really something small like that needs more time to size up. building intuition about this, interested to know if anyone else would consider grape cuttings for example to only need one season to get up to size for sale. Many prunus need two years for sure, many rooted cuttings only start to grow in the spring.

Hops are kinda crazy when you dig them up. i just have this handful for spring orders, all volunteers. variety is fuggle. #hops

Hops seeds from a few flowers. We planted some hops around our garden from seed about five years ago and they kind of explode from the ground every spring and cover the fences. Offering these in packs of 100 seeds on our shop now with free shipping. #seeds #hops

Virginia creeper seeds are like little grapes with hard seeds inside. I've been propagating them from softwood with good success, and also trying a seedbed this fall to see how quickly they'll grow. We have extra seeds so they're available from our site. #propagation

Valiant grape is one of the few that survive -40. cuttings from a friend's old vine, might be the first time it's been pruned. fully hardy unprotected over the winters just growing along a fence. these are going into the root cellar for spring planting. #grapes #hardwoodcuttings #valiantgrape
